To achieve balance, many health practitioners recommend consuming an 80/20 mix of alkaline and acid-forming foods. Alkaline forming foods consist of fresh, preferably organic, fruits and vegetables and do not typically represent 80% of even a vegetarian diet. The standard American diet consists of a high proportion of extremely acid-forming foods and beverages.
